Principles of Clinical Medicine I

Exploration of foundational skills and knowledge pertinent to becoming an osteopathic physician: learn to perform a comprehensive history, deliver patient-centered care, and incorporate effective verbal and non-verbal communication. Demonstrate beginning mastery of oral presentation and documentation skills essential to clinical practice. Obtain and interpret normal and abnormal vital signs. Instruction in the development and performance of routine physical examination skills of the musculoskeletal system. Introduction to various diagnostic imaging modalities, including ultrasound, and incorporation of diagnostic imaging-focused content relevant to the musculoskeletal system in both the classroom and through simulation. Inclusion of small group and interactive techniques involving standardized patients, case studies, simulation, peer-to-peer instruction, and role-play as the primary learning methods. Formative standardized patient encounters (SPEs) are incorporated into this course to assess student knowledge and skill development throughout the semester. The term ends with a summative standardized patient encounter and clinical skills assessment to determine readiness to progress to the spring OMS-1 term.
