Principles of Clinical Medicine IV

Exploration of advanced and integrative clinical skills and knowledge essential to the osteopathic physician as students prepare for entry into clinical training, with continued emphasis on patient-centered care, clinical reasoning, and effective verbal and non-verbal communication. Cultivate comprehensive history-taking, focused physical examination, oral presentation, and medical documentation skills, with increasing independence in clinical decision-making through synthesis of complex patient data. Instruction focuses on the physical examination, laboratory findings, imaging, and clinical assessment of the endocrine, male and female reproductive and genitourinary, and hematologic systems, including recognition, interpretation, and integration of normal and abnormal findings. Continued integration of diagnostic imaging-focused content to relevant organ systems in both the classroom and through simulation. A culminating wrap-up block emphasizes pediatrics as well as a comprehensive integration of all body systems, reinforcing clinical reasoning across multisystem presentations and preparing students for holistic patient care. Experiential learning remains central through small-group and interactive modalities, including standardized patient encounters, simulations, case study sessions, task trainers, and peer-to-peer instruction. Formative standardized patient encounters support ongoing skill development, and the course concludes with a summative standardized patient encounter and clinical skills assessment to assess readiness for transition into clinical rotations.
