Understanding Doctoral Nursing Programs: PhD vs. DNP

A DNP student in navy scrubs performs a neurological exam on another person wearing royal blue scrubs in a clinical skills lab. Both individuals are holding up one finger while maintaining eye contact to test coordination and focus.

Doctoral nursing programs typically fall into two categories: the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

PhD in Nursing

A PhD in Nursing prepares nurse scientists and scholars to create new knowledge through original research. Graduates design, conduct, and publish studies that contribute to the evidence base guiding nursing and healthcare practice.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

A DNP prepares expert clinicians and healthcare leaders to apply research findings in real-world settings. Graduates use existing evidence to solve clinical problems, implement best practices, and evaluate outcomes that improve patient care.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) endorsed the DNP in 2004 to advance nursing practice to the doctoral level, aligning it with other professional doctorates such as the MD. The AACN defines the DNP as a program that prepares “nurse leaders at the highest level of nursing practice to improve patient outcomes and translate research into practice.”

Choosing Your Path

  • PhD graduates create new evidence.
  • DNP graduates apply that evidence to practice.

When considering doctoral education, nurses should reflect on their career goals and seek guidance from mentors.

  • Those interested in research and scholarship may pursue a PhD.
  • Those focused on advanced clinical practice, leadership, or quality improvement may find the DNP a better fit.

The DNP at Baptist Health Sciences University

At Baptist University, the DNP program prepares nurses to practice at the highest clinical level as advanced practice registered nurses. Students engage in rigorous academic and clinical training while partnering with healthcare organizations to address real-world challenges using the latest, evidence-based practices.
