BHSU Launches New Online Course for Baptist Sonographers

A smiling healthcare professional performs an ultrasound on a patient lying on an exam table. The provider wears a white lab coat and looks at a monitor while holding the ultrasound probe, engaging warmly with the patient.

This fall, Baptist Health Sciences University is launching a new skills-focused online training program tailored specifically for working sonographers. This program offers registered diagnostic medical sonographers who are employed with Baptist the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and professional competency in specialty areas, such as abdominal, pediatric, vascular, adult cardiac, fetal echocardiography, breast, obstetrics and gynecology, and musculoskeletal sonography.

“These courses can deepen a sonographer’s specialty knowledge,” said BHSU Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Chair and Assistant Professor Connie Willis. “Sonographers with enhanced skills may have more opportunities for advancement, including career paths in management, leadership or education. They may also help deliver higher quality patient care and assist with meeting lab accreditation standards.”

Important Deadline Information for the Upcoming Course

The first class in this program is Adult Echocardiography I, which begins on Thursday, Sept. 4. The online course lasts for 13 weeks, but students may work at a faster pace if they choose. The course is open only to Baptist team members who are registered diagnostic medical sonographers. In the future, the program will be open to sonographers working outside of Baptist as well. Topics for this class will include anatomy, hemodynamics and physiology, valve assessment, pathology, clinical symptoms, examination techniques and sonographic appearance.

The deadline to apply for this course is Friday, Aug. 8, while the deadline to apply for a scholarship is Friday, August 1. Click here for more information and to apply, or call 866-575-2247.
