Let Your Blue Healer Spirit Shine: Homecoming 2022

Homecoming has come to the Baptist Health Sciences University campus. On Oct. 1, BHSU had its first on-campus Homecoming, allowing current students and alumni to reunite on campus for the day.

Activities took off on the Campus Hub field lot, where alumni and students gathered for tailgating festivities. Later, the Student Life and Activities office hosted a student Inaugural Royals Pageant and the grand finale event, Silent Disco.

Tailgate

In the sunny 78-degree Fall weather, 200 alumni, students, and guests gathered at the Campus Hub for a chance to socialize at the tailgate. Two SEC football games were broadcast for the attendees viewing pleasure. Attendees watched the games while enjoying free barbeque and nachos from 901 Catering.

“BHSU has always been a welcoming family environment,” Zac Cox, relationship marketing coordinator, states. “I felt that, as a student and as a new employee. I think that everyone felt like they were at their family reunion and picked up right where they left off the last time they were here.”

While enjoying a free Italian Ice from Brown's Italian Ice, the first 100 students to arrive had the opportunity to create their own homecoming T-shirt. Face painting and a moon bounce house allowed kids to take part in this event in a fun way while enjoying a surprise appearance from Hartley Healer.

Inaugural Royals Pageant

To support BHSU pride and provide students a chance to develop their professionalism and provide a confidence-building opportunity, members of the Student Government Association thought to host the university’s first Inaugural Royals Pageant.

“The pageant was met with resounding cheering and applause from our Royals 2022 audience,” Sarah Biggs, student transitions coordinator, states. “All of our contestants did an incredible job and they are all tremendous ambassadors for BHSU.”

Six contestants participated in three rounds, each round making up a percentage of determining the winner. Fifty percent included a professional interview. What judges were looking for consisted of personality, communication, the content of answers, and leadership. The Scrub Strut consisted of 25 percent of the pageant. This round was judged by confidence, individuality, fit, and audience impact. The final round was that of an On-Stage Q&A. The contestants were then judged based on confidence, personality, and the content of their answers.

Haley Maccarino, a senior nursing student, won first place, which allowed Shania Fields, a surgical technology student, to finish second.

Silent Disco

Homecoming Day concluded with a Silent Disco event. This event consisted of participants receiving headphones with two playlists to dance to. Mirrorballs and glow-in-the-dark decorations were used to transform the BHSU Library into a neon disco party.
