Senior Nursing Students Promote Wellness During Employee Flu Clinic

Senior nursing students from Baptist Health Sciences University recently rolled up their sleeves—literally and figuratively—to support Baptist’s annual Employee Flu Vaccine Clinic, administering flu shots to faculty and staff across campus.

The clinic provides free flu vaccines to members of the university as part of the Baptist’s mandatory influenza vaccination program. The initiative emphasizes the importance of protecting patients, health care workers, and one another during flu season.

“Prevention is powerful—Baptist senior nursing students put learning into practice by promoting community wellness and making a difference,” said Marilyn Dillard, Ed.D., RN, Assistant Professor of Nursing.

Hands-On Learning in Action

For the senior nursing students, the flu clinic is more than just a vaccination event, it’s an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in a meaningful, hands-on way.

“I’m glad that we’re able to connect the classroom teaching to the skills here,” one student shared. “We’re actually able to identify the muscle, prepare the needles, and take care of the community.”

Another student highlighted the benefit of gaining experience beyond traditional clinical settings:

“It’s a good clinical experience away from clinical time, and I appreciate the hands-on activities that we’re able to take part in.”

The event also strengthened connections across campus, allowing students to engage with faculty and staff in a more personal and collaborative way.

“It’s absolutely amazing that they’re allowing the nursing students to do it,” said one student. “It gives us experience and a chance to connect with staff that we may not know. And so, it feels more personal.”

“I love when we do things like this because it bridges the gap, where it’s not just student and professor. It reminds us that we’re all adults, and it becomes a personal event.”

By working alongside professors, Baptist University nursing students demonstrated Baptist’s mission in action—providing compassionate service, promoting wellness, and protecting the community they are preparing to lead.
